Schurz High School Slated to Receive New Athletic Field
My office has been working with Schurz High School, Friends of Schurz, adjacent neighbors, and other community members to retool the proposal for a new regulation-sized soccer field in what is now the muddy lot northwest of the school.
As you may recall after the last plans were discussed with the community, I committed to keeping Waveland open to vehicular traffic, and I remain committed to that. However, to accommodate the field and allow Schurz to play IHSA-regulation home games for the first time in its history, Waveland would need to be narrowed by a few feet, and Waveland will need to be one way heading from Milwaukee into the community.
In addition to the soccer field, the proposal includes a softball field, a running track, and exercise equipment. Those amenities would be open to the community during non-school use. No buildings or permanent stands are planned. Lighting will be engineered to prevent spillover from the field.
Schurz, as a high school, is improving greatly. With its STEM Grow Food Science Lab, International Baccalaureate program, Junior ROTC program, AVID college readiness program, Honors program, Career and Technical Education programs, after-school activities, and a growing athletic department, Schurz has made great strides.
This proposal is another step toward supporting our students and giving the community a sense of pride in their neighborhood public school. It’s another step on the path toward making Schurz one of the best neighborhood high schools in the city.
In the coming weeks, Schurz will host a public open house to offer more details on this plan. Ultimately, the community’s input from the last meeting allowed CPS to design a multi-use sports field that accommodates vehicular traffic and offers the quality amenities that allow our student athletes to compete at the highest level.View the Plans
