Alderman Arena is a strong voice on City Council for an elected school board. He has even gone so far as filing a resolution to place a non-binding referendum for an elected school board to appear on the ballot twice. The recent administrative failures of Chicago Public Schools, from the mismanagement of Special Education Funding to the pervasive sexual abuse that plagued our schools, serve as further evidence that Chicago is long overdue for an elected school board. He continues to put strong pressure on the Mayor, State, and other City Council members to do the right thing by our residents and allowing them to vote for our school board members.
In the 45th Ward, Alderman Arena has worked hard to maintain and improve our local schools. He has worked closely with CPS to find resources to bring major capital improvements to our local schools, including new classroom space and turf fields. Alderman Arena has even used money from his annual discretionary budget to help supplement the funding for some of these major improvements.
