The Department of Streets and Sanitation works tirelessly throughout the City of Chicago. Every year, they handle over one million service requests. Their efforts contribute to maintaining the wonderful city and each one makes a difference. If you are in need of a Streets and Sanitation service, submit a service request.Common services include:
The Department of Streets and Sanitation sweep the city’s streets April through November. During street cleaning days, vehicles cannot park on a specific side of the street to accommodate the street sweeper. Signs will be posted to notify residents of parking restrictions. Please watch for these signs to avoid ticketing and to allow the sweeper to clean the street.
The street sweeping schedule is available at the Sweeparound.us website. Residents also have the option to sign up for text or email alerts to ensure they don’t inadvertently miss a street cleaning notice on their block. Instructions for how to sign up for text or email alerts is also available online. Those who signed up for alerts in the past will need to resubscribe, as alert subscriptions do not carry over.
Residential garbage pickup is provided for households in single-family homes and apartment buildings of four units or less. All residential garbage is placed in plastic, lidded 96-gallon black garbage carts. These carts are supplied free to eligible residences. If your garbage cart has been stolen or damaged, or if your garbage has not been picked up, please let us know. Though bulk pick-up is no longer available, please contact our office to see if the item can be taken during your regular garbage collection.
Recycling pick-up is now available in the ward. As Mayor Emanuel announced in the summer of 2011, the City of Chicago has begun utilizing Waste Management to deliver this service. As a result, as of October 3, 2011, Chicago’s blue cart residential recycling will be collected by both public and private crews. In the 45th Ward, Waste Management has assumed responsibility for collected recyclables every other week. There will not be a change in the materials collected or the collection frequency.
Recycling is picked up every other week by Waste Management. You can check your collection schedule at the city’s website. If you receive curbside refuse collection, you can put your recycling out the day your garbage is collected. Those who receive alley collection are advised to leave their blue cart out the entire week of pick up.
If you have chemicals, paints, used motor oils or electronics and want to know where they can be recycled, visit earth911.com. The website will direct you to locations where you can recycle these materials. The city’s ‘Household Chemicals & Computer Recycling Facility’ is located at 1150 N. North Branch Street and operates Tuesdays: 7am -12pm, Thursdays: 2pm- 7pm, and the first Saturday of every month: 8am – 3 pm.
Graffiti can be removed from public or private property by the city’s Graffiti Blasters. Graffiti will either be painted over (if the graffiti is on a painted surface) or blasted off with a high pressure baking soda and water solution (if it is on brick, cement or stone). You can report graffiti that is on your property, public property or on someone else’s property. If you would like to report graffiti, please contact our office. Please provide the exact address, type of material the surface is on (i.e. unpainted brick, metal, etc), where on the building the graffiti is, and if the graffiti is over 6 feet from the ground. The City does not remove graffiti from glass.
Chicago Snow Command monitors weather systems and deploys 274 snow trucks that plow and spray road salt. Arterial streets are plowed first. After those streets are deemed safe, the trucks are dispatched to the residential streets. Streets near hospitals and schools are given higher priority.
The City Does Not Plow Alleys
Homeowners and businesses must clear snow from sidewalks adjacent to their properties. If there are sidewalks in your area that are not shoveled, please contact our office.
