Independence Branch Library Community Meeting Scheduled for 6 PM on May 15
On Sunday, March 19, John Ronan Architects was unveiled as the winner of a city design competition for the new Independence Branch Library at 4022 N. Elston. The design includes a library on the ground level with affordable housing above as part of a unique agreement between the Chicago Housing Authority and the Chicago Public Library for a mixed-use development at the site. John Ronan Architects was recently the only Chicago finalist for the Obama Library.
After Independence Branch Library’s former location closed in 2015 due to smoke damage from a fire at the adjacent building, neighbors and supporters lobbied for a new and improved library. In October, it was announced that the library would have a new permanent home where the former Hollerbach Funeral Home was located.
A public meeting to gather community input on the final design will be on Monday, May 15, at 6 PM at Murphy Elementary, 3539 W. Grace. Construction on the new library is slated to begin later this year, with completion anticipated by winter of 2018.
