Town Hall Meeting for Hitch School Bump-Outs July 31
This spring, my office submitted an application with Commissioner Bridget Gainer to receive up to $75,000 for an infrastructure project in the ward. I am pleased to announce that our application to install bump-outs at the intersection of Byrn Mawr and Austin was approved.
Every day, children cross this busy intersection to access Hitch Elementary School. While there is a crossing guard on duty throughout the school year, my office still receives numerous complaints about people speeding through the area to reach their destination.
A bump-out extends the curb, reducing the distance a pedestrian has to cross the street. It also calms traffic by improving visibility for drivers and encouraging them to slow down due to the additional infrastructure where a parking lane may have previously existed. Hitch Elementary School is the perfect candidate for this project due to the heavy motorist and pedestrian traffic. In fact, this project was an item on the 2016 Participatory Budgeting ballot; however, much to the disappointment of the Hitch community, it was not approved.
I would like to thank Commissioner Bridget Gainer for collaborating with my office to coordinate these important infrastructure improvements, helping make our streets safer for children crossing to go to school.
There will be a town hall meeting to discuss the project details and the initiative of Invest in Cook County on Monday, July 31, at 6:00 PM at Hitch Elementary, 5625 N. McVicker. Please enter through doors 6 and 7 off of the Seminole parking lot.
