Mayfair was initially developed as a commuter suburb centered around the railroad station (now Metra station) near the intersection of Montrose and Cicero. Commercial development later spread out along Cicero, Lawrence, Montrose and Pulaski. The neighborhood continued to grow and densify into the 1920s, with a particularly large number of bungalows constructed in the area. In recognition of this fact, the North Mayfair Historic Bungalow District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Mayfair continues to attract new homeowners with its historic brick houses and 2-flats.
