In December 2013, I had the distinct pleasure of cutting the ribbon on the new Beaubien Elementary playground and turf field.
The improvements came as a result of the Participatory Budgeting process, where, the majority of 45th Ward residents voted to approve the allocation of my annual discretionary budget for a new turf field and playground on the school’s campus.
The $183,000 my office was able to leverage for these improvements incentivized Chicago Public Schools to contribute an additional $400,000. The remaining $5,000 was a result of fundraising efforts organized by the students.
This project shows what a community can accomplish when they work together towards a common goal.
